Landscape Architecture
Today I got the chance to become involved in landscape architecture, something I’ve always wanted to do. I will be helping the landscape architecture team for the near future, likely across several projects, which I’m very excited about.
I have always appreciated the relationship we have in urban spaces to the land we live on. How the land offers respite from the sun and invites activity, especially loitering, gathering, and playing is my favorite thing about urban landscape architecture. I also appreciate the synergy between landscape and building when a project is successful – a harmonious, thoughtful use of the context.
I also have a close relationship to nature, especially the New England woods and beaches. I am an avid swimmer and climber. The forest floor, boulders, crags, shady trees, salty water, and sandy shores make me feel at home, at peace, safe, strong, challenged, and small. I haven’t been able to ruminate on all of these things professionally, so I am excited to have my head in this space for a while.
Below are a couple projects that resonated with me while searching for landscape architecture online. The first, Gleisdreieck Park in Berlin was the only one of the bunch I have been to personally. I loved the industrial remnants, the way the park stitched several neighborhoods together, and the range of activities offered. It is separate and inseparable from the city at the same time.
